Biomass, from which bio-energy is obtained, consists of biologically degradable products (vegetable and animal products), such as brush, KGW waste and manure. Energy can be obtained by burning and gasification, which produces heat and/or electricity
Burning
Electricity can be generated using a steam turbine with the heat released by burning biomass. The remaining heat can be used for heating purposes.
Gasification
By heating without oxygen, biomass is turned into a gaseous fuel. The gaseous fuel can then be burned and turned into electricity and heat.
The government encourages biomass installations by issuing ‘groenestroomcertificaten’ or ‘GSC’ (‘green energy certificates’) and ‘warmtekrachtcertificaten’ or ‘WKC’ (‘combined heat and power certificates’).
Benefits:
- High production sustainable energy
- It is an economical source of energy that supplies energy and uses very little of it
- It helps reduce CO2 emissions and minimize the greenhouse effect
- No odour nuisance
- Small-scale installations are possible
