As the name says, CHP is about combining heat and power. Heat and power stations are much more efficient than power stations which only generate electricity. The principle is simple: a turbine, driven by the burning of biogas, generates electricity.
The remaining heat can be used to heat a building (or cool it down by way of absorption), for example.
The government encourages bio-CHP by issuing ‘groenestroomcertificaten’ or ‘GSC’ (‘green energy certificates’) as well as ‘warmtekrachtcertificaten’ or ‘WKC’ (‘combined heat and power certificates’).
